UNISAME REGRETS NON INCLUSION OF SECTOR REPRESENTATIVE IN COMMITTEES

The Union of Small and Medium Enterprises (UNISAME) has urged Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to include representatives from the Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) sector in all government reform committees. This is because UNISAME argues that the SME sector is the majority sector in the economy and should be included in discussions about reform to ensure that their perspectives are considered in policies and decisions that affect them, such as those related to regulatory, governance, and development frameworks.
  • Reasoning: UNISAME, led by President Zulfikar Thaver, believes that since the SME sector is the backbone of the economy, its representatives are essential for the success of any reform committee. They note that without SME representation, committees are incomplete, as SMEs are present in every segment of the economy, from trade to services, and are responsible for most value addition and exports.
  • Context: This plea is in response to the formation of various reform committees aimed at improving government and semi-government institutions. UNISAME has highlighted past issues, including financial constraints, inconsistent government policies, and a lack of political will, which have hindered the progress of the SME sector.
  • Goal: By including SME representatives, UNISAME hopes to create more inclusive and effective reform processes that address the specific challenges and needs of the sector, leading to better outcomes for stakeholders.
